Three-Week's Notice

Welcome to Week Three of my "Try New Foods" Challenge!

Growing up, I was never cole slaw's biggest fan. But since it'd been quite a few years since my last taste of the stuff, I figured I ought to give it another chance. The verdict? Sad to say, I'm still not keen on cole slaw. Oh well.

My mom really liked it, so I'll post the recipe anyway:

Little Vegan Cole Slaw
1 small head of green cabbage, thinly sliced
1 medium carrot, finely shredded
1 Tbs grated onion
1 cup Vegenaise, or to taste
2-3 caps of apple cider vinegar
1 or 2 tsp of sugar
salt and pepper to taste
raisins (optional)

Add all the ingredients together and chill.

So in three weeks I've had two successes and a failure.

What shall I try next week? Stay tuned!

Bianca (of Vegan Crunk) has tried mangoes, Cookiemouse tried burdock, Kumquat Peekaboo tried cauliflower, Pleasantly Plump Vegan tried purple eggplant, Jenny (of Vegetarian Adventure) tried seitan... has anyone else tried a fun new food lately?

i guess some foods just aren't good, vegan or not. (at least, that's what i think about coleslaw and "egg" salad.)

i tried banana bread this week for the first time! if you are looking for a great recipe, the v-con low-er fat banana bread is the way to go. (my friend made them as muffins and gave me one, hehe!)

The mocha shake was SO GOOD. It tasted like it had freshly brewed espresso in it - none of that icky powdered coffee flavor! And the Jamaican Jerk sandwich... I can't stop thinking about it. I've decided that I have to try making it at home, because who knows the next time I'll make it to Fort Worth?!

I should start trying new foods, too! I was so pleasantly surprised when I finally tried brussels sprouts again, I don't know why I haven't attempted more new things! I will make it my goal too, to try at least one new thing a week (I'll try, anyway!)

Pretty pictures! I've never loved slaw, either, but I also haven't ever had a vegan version (yet). Good for you for giving it another go, even if you were less than pleased with the results!

yeah, of course, i'd be honored! :)

haha sorry, i'm new to the blogging world, so i don't know blogging etiquette and i added you without asking, but i guess that doesn't matter now! i can't wait for the chocolate smoothie/shake recipe..

I've tried Brussels sprouts, but I found them really bitter :( I know there was something else that I tried, but I can't remember anymore! I have post-exam brain - I can't remember things...

I never liked Coleslaw either. Considering the fact that salads for me were lettuce + olive oil, I always thought "ew: cabbage and mayo?!"

I like cabbage now, but without the mayo.

I agree on the whole cole slaw thing. Even as a kid, I thought it was pretty foul. I don't think I'll give it another try any time soon...

Why, just this morning, I finally had my first glass of hemp milk (in the form of a cafe au lait.) Just as I'd hoped, I loved it!! My only complaint (with the Living Harvest brand, anyway) is that it's just a bit too oversweetened. I'm now very interested in trying the French Meadow hemp tortillas...

Cole slaw has *always* been my second most hated food.

Saturday was a day of food firsts for me, but I haven't had time to blog about it yet. :( I love that you're challenging yourself, CCV!

I just tried kale for the first time in a salad and green juice.
I love it.

I only tried cole slaw once and remember not really liking it much either...but that MAY have been 'cause it was cafeteria stuff :p
And yesterday I tried pumpkin yogurt! It was kinda nasty--but I put too much ground ginger [shaky hand :s] by accident, so that was probably why!

hey, its ok not to enjoy coleslaw. I won't judge you. (I don't really like it either)
I also enjoyed reading about you in the previous post. I promise I don't stalk you... much (look out the window!)
Sorry if I sound like a freak. I'm in a weird mood!!

Awww at least you had 2 successes :) I on the other hand love cole slaw and think it looks yummy... pass it along over here :)

Good for you for trying, anyway! My friend makes coleslaw with raisins and fresh dill added--it's quite yummy that way (in case you ever decide to give it another shot!).

Re: your comment on my blog, I think the salad recipe was originally made for papaya, so it should work. . .but only if it's green! I've never been able to find any.

I most enjoy coleslaw wrapped in a homemade whole wheat tortilla with a tofu fish stick- it's yummy, and not too coleslaw-y!

I love the slaw! But I sure hated blood oranges.

I must say I too am not a big cole slaw fan, but your recipe sounds delicious. I also happen to have a jar of vegan mayo in my fridge right now so I will try it soon.

i would totally eat that coleslaw! in fact, i've never met a coleslaw i didn't like. of course, i'm from the South and my Grammie had it at just about every lunch get together.

I tried brussels sprouts this week. I posted about them once, and I'm doing it again soon...

I have never liked mayo-ey cole slaw, but maybe you can give it a try with a lighter dressing? Shredded cabbage, OJ, oil and mustard is my fave. Or instead of cabbage you can try it with broccoli and/or carrots cut into matchsticks.

Kimberly,

Hehe, I’m intrigued now… what is your #1 most-hated food, above cole slaw?

Blue cheese!! A truly evil food. Any of my omni friends that eat it know not to breathe near me for the rest of the night ;)

mm, I think I haven't tried anything new the past weeks... how boring... well, I tried Kale for the first time some weeks ago!

Kimberly--

I agree 100%! I never liked blue cheese; it always tasted stale and sour to me. My dad loves it, though. *Shudder*

I always hated coleslaw too, but am learning to like it :-)
I tried beets for the first time since childhood a few weeks ago... and I loved them!
